The ERC representative in the Spanish Congress, Gabriel Rufián, on Monday called on the president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, to submit to the vote of confidence before the National Day on September 11, because the people of Catalonia “deserve it”.
He made his call during a news conference alongside his colleague in the Congress, Joan Tardà. Both men said that the motion of confidence scheduled after the failure to reach agreement on the 2016 Budget “has to be a success.”
“The aim is for the motion of confidence to become a great opportunity to consolidate the process we have begun and for it to act as a catalyst to accelerate it,” said Tardà, who in his response to journalists added that it is fundamental that the motion of confidence include the budget.
On the question of also including a unilateral referendum on independence (RUI, in Catalan) –supported by the CUP party– he said that only once it is understood that the Catalan budget is part of any vote in favour of Puigdemont, “other aspects can be considered.”
