If the Congress of Deputies suggests certain support for the right to decide or reform of the Magna Carta, the Senate rules out any hope of constitutional change. The Partit Popular on Sunday gained an absolute majority in the Upper Chamber, when it obtained 124 of the 208 sitting senators.

The PP victory is emphatic by some margin when compared to the second-placed party, PSOE, which gained 47 senators, almost 80 less than the party led by Mariano Rajoy. At some distance is Podem as the third party, with nine representatives. Ciutadans did not obtain any seats and is left without a presence in this chamber.

The fourth party in the Senate according to the number of votes is ERC, which will have six representatives, the same as Democràcia i Llibertat and PNB, who follow the Republicans in the number of votes. Also gaining Senate seats were En Comú Podem (4), En Marea (2), Compromís-Podem (1), the Basques Cambio Aldaketa (1), and the Canary Islands’s Coalición Canaria (1) and Agrupación Socialista Gomera (1).
