  • CA

More than 10 million people speak Catalan. In all, 10,047,102 speak the language and it is estimated that 13,406,271 understand it, according to the CAT 2016 report that the Plataforma per la Llengua presented on Tuesday, and which includes half a hundred points of data on the current situation of the Catalan language. This information was obtained from cross-referencing the results of the latest sociolingusitic polls in all Catalan-speaking areas with the number of inhabitants registered as residents in each area. The report also refers to the lack of official and legal recognition of Catalan in certain spheres.

Some six million of these speakers live in Catalonia, 2.56 million live in Valencia and 888,271 speakers are in the Balearic Islands. The half a million speakers left over are distributed among the other areas where Catalan is spoken as well as registered as residents abroad (without counting residents in Northern Catalonia and Andorra).
